70 year old male with a history of coronary heart disease was scheduled for an elective inguinal hernia repair. His medications included daily aspirin and clopidogrel (Plavix) but he had stopped these 5 days previously as instructed. Platelet aggregation studies were requested to assess for residual drug-related platelet function inhibition. His platelet count was 208,000/ul. The image shown is the aggregation pattern and ADP release at a final concentration of 5uM ADP using platelet-rich plasma (PRP)from the patient and a normal control. Patient (Blue)shows an initial wave of aggregation followed by disaggregation beginning at 1 minute. His ADP release(Black) is 0 .The control PRP shows 75% aggregation (Red) and 1.3uM ADP release (Green).
