Neutrophils surround anaplastic lymphocytes. In some "neutrophil-rich" cases, the anaplastic cells are difficult to find and the image is confused with an infectious or other inflammatory process. In such cases a stain for CD30 antigen helps to detect the few anaplastic lymphoma cells.
