Peripheral smear from an asymptomatic patient with a reported platelet count of 20,000/ul is shown. Note the platelet clumping. When the sample was recollected with a vacutainer containing heparin anticoagulant, the platelet count was 286,000/ul. These findings are consistent with a pseudothrombocytopenia secondary to EDTA-dependent agglutinins.
