Determining the cell lineage of blasts may be difficult particularly when they lack distinguishing morphologic features such as granules or Auer rods. In this picture, the blasts have characteristic indentations or imprints in the nucleus. This feature is known as "thumbprinting" and is associated with myeloid lineage.
