Bone marrow smear, MGG. A single macrophage has phagocytized a lot of red cells and platelets, three monocytes, two neutrophils, and one lymphocyte. This picture was taken from a bone marrow film of a 36-year-old man with AIDS and Kaposi's sarcoma. This macrophage summarizes the pathogenesis of pancytopenia in this patient, who developed a hemophagocytic syndrome after bacterian infection.
