Lipid-laden monocytes (1a-1c) were noted in peripheral blood of a patient with hemoglobin SC disease in crisis who was diagnosed with bone marrow necrosis / fat embolism syndrome on postmortem examination.  A section of the patient’s lung with lipid droplets highlighted in black following tissue osmication is shown in 1d.
