Megakaryocyte in normal bone marrow.
A representative megakaryocyte is seen within normal bone marrow. The cell is markedly larger than surrounding hematopoietic elements and displays abundant cytoplasm with a characteristic multilobulated, hyperchromatic nucleus resulting from endomitosis. Megakaryocytes are normally present in low numbers and are typically located near marrow sinusoids, where they give rise to circulating platelets. This image was taken in the hematology lab at Varastegan Institute for Medical Sciences.
