On higher magnification, the characteristic features of the LE cell can be noted. The neutrophil nucleus can be seen to surround the homogenous inclusion. The inclusion consists of phagocytized and digested nuclear material from other neutrophils that has reacted with autoantibodies. The ANA titer in this patient was markedly elevated and a diagnosis of lupus erythematosus was confirmed.
