Peripheral blood from a patient with hereditary elliptocytosis (May-Grünwald-Giemsa stain). Elliptocytes are red blood cells with an oval or elongated shape, from egg-shaped (ovalocytes) to rod- or pencil-shaped (pencil cells). They have central pallor with hemoglobin appearing to be concentrated at the ends of elongated cells and rounded ends.
