Wright stained peripheral blood. This specimen was in an outside box for several hours before courier pickup. This could also occur if the blood specimen has been exposed to a heat source for an extended period. Patient history will differentiate this from the blood of a burn patient. RBC fragments may be erroneously counted by automated analyzers as platelets. These specimens should be recollected and maintained at proper temperature.
