Blood smear form a patient with beta thalassemia shows bright colored cells, intermediate staining cells and colorless cells reflecting the uneven distribution of hemoglobin F among the RBCs. In another thalassemia, hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin, all RBCs will stain bright red.
