Chest wall biopsy reveals monomorphic appearance of large cells and frequent mitoses indicating a rapidly growing tumor. The lymphoma cells express T-cell antigen CD45RO, ALK oncoprotein and CD30, and are negative for B cell antigen CD20, kappa and lambda light chains. Without immunohistochemical studies, this monomorphic appearance would be difficult to distinguish from a large cell lymphoma of B-cell origin. Importantly, the ALK+ lymphomas have a generally better prognosis than large B-cell lymphomas of similar stage.
