In contrast to the initial presentation where sheets of plasma cells replace the marrow, the presentation of relapse may be more subtle. In this marrow, the increased plasma cells are seen amid the background of normal hematopoietic elements. In addition, the involvement by myeloma may be patchy with some areas of the marrow appearing normal.
