Circulating hairy cells in a patient with relapse Hairy cell leukemia (HCL).In many cases, especially in older peripheral blood sample, the typical hairy cytomorphology may not be apparent but nuclear characteristics such as monocytoid/dumbbell-shaped nuclei (as seen in the cell on the top right) is also rather characteristic for hairy cells. Flow cytometric demonstration of B-cell markers as well as positivity for CD11c, CD22, CD25, CD103 as well as CD123 allows confirmation of phenotype.
