Blood obtained by venipuncture rarely shows these odd looking cytologically bland spindle cells that medium to large size, oval nuclei and some showing nuclear grooves. These are normal endothelial cells particularly seen on the peripheral smear if the needles are barbed or reused. Possible differential diagnosis includes infectious mononucleosis, leukemia, or even circulating malignant cells from sarcoma.
