The bone marrow smear of a patient with beta thalassemia showing pseudo gaucher cells and erythropoiesis hyperplasia. Pseudo gaucher cells have an eccentric nucleus, foamy cytoplasm but lack the tubular inclusions seen in Gaucher cells on electron microscopy. They can be seen in a variety of conditions such as acute leukemia, multiple myeloma, myelodysplasia, lymphoma, thalassemia, and disseminated mycobacterial infection. They are seen in circumstances related to high cell turnover.
