Toxic granulation is the presence of large basophilic or azurophilic  cytoplasmic granules in neutrophils, bands, and metamyelocytes. These granules are slightly larger, more abundant and have an increased staining density compared with typical neutrophil granules.

Toxic granulation may be seen in association with conditions that lead to increased cytokine release including infection, burns, trauma, and administration of granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF).
