Brilliant cresyl blue is a supravital dye that stains ribonucleoprotein, thus used for enumeration of reticulocytes. In this case of acute myeloid leukemia a reticulocyte count was ordered. While reticulocytes are virtually absent, the brilliant cresyl blue dye stains the abundant ribonucleoprotein contained within blast nuclei.
