Pneumocystis jirovecii cysts can be seen in the sputum smear of a patient diagnosed with Pneumocystis pneumonia(PCP) and positive for HIV. Pneumocystis jirovecii is a yeast-like fungus of the genus Pneumocystis. HIV/AIDS increase the risk of developing pneumonia by compromising the immune system.
