Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is an uncommon indolent lymphoid malignancy characterized by the accumulation of neoplastic B cells with abundant cytoplasm and "hairy" projections within the peripheral blood, bone marrow, and spleen. HCL is postulated to arise from a late, activated memory B cell exhibiting pre-plasma cell or post-germinal center features and it is associated with pancytopenia and infectious complications due to progressive infiltration of the bone marrow and spleen.
