Wuchereria bancrofti is a parasitic filarial worm responsible for lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis. When Wuchereria bancrofti is observed in a peripheral blood smear, it indicates the presence of microfilariae, the larval stage of the parasite, in the bloodstream. In peripheral blood smears, microfilariae of W. bancrofti can be observed, particularly during the night when they are most active in the bloodstream. These microfilariae appear as elongated, thread-like organisms with a pointed tail and a sheath covering their bodies. The presence of microfilariae in the blood smear is a key diagnostic feature for confirming infection with W. bancrofti.
