A myeloblast in a peripheral smear is an immature precursor cell of the granulocytic series (white blood cells) that is normally found in the bone marrow but can appear in the peripheral blood under certain conditions. Myeloblasts are large cells with a high nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio, fine chromatin, and 2-5 prominent nucleoli. Their cytoplasm is usually scant and may contain a few azurophilic granules.
