Platelet satellitism refers to the phenomenon where platelets cluster around white blood cells, particularly neutrophils, in peripheral blood smears. This can sometimes be seen under a microscope and may be mistaken for low platelet counts (pseudothrombocytopenia) when using automated blood analyzers. It’s often related to the presence of EDTA (a common anticoagulant used in blood collection tubes) and does not indicate any underlying disease.
