bone marrow infiltration by numerous histiocytes (macrophages) that appear distended and packed with small intracellular yeast forms; these organisms are seen as tiny (2–4 µm), round to oval basophilic bodies with a surrounding clear halo (pseudocapsule), often clustered within the cytoplasm of macrophages, with occasional extracellular forms.
