Parvovirus B19 (erythrovirus) infection in the bone marrow  is characterized by marked erythroid hypoplasia and presence of Giant Pronormoblasts (Lantern Cells).

These cells are markedly enlarged erythroid precursors (25–32 µm) with large, eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions and cytoplasmic blebs or pseudopods, sometimes referred to as "dog ear" projections.
