Flame cells in a case of simultaneous occurance of MM & AML

Flame cells are usually associated with IgA multiple myeloma, but they may be seen in non-IgA myelomas, MGUS and with reactive plasmacytosis.

The strong pinkish hue giving rise to the "flaming" appearance is suspected to be due to the high carbohydrate content of IgA molecules precipitated in the endoplasmic reticulum.
