This image shows the peripheral blood smear of a 16 year-old female patient diagnosed with hemoglobin H disease (HbH). HbH disease is a form of alpha thalassemia(--/-α) in which moderately to severe anemia develops due to the reduced formation of alpha globin chains. (Hb=7.4 g/dL)
The smear is stained by Supravital (new methylene blue) to detect "golf-ball" HbH inclusions which are characteristic of HbH disease. About 6-8% golf-balls can be seen in this smear.
