This images shows the peripheral blood smear of a patient diagnosed with multiple myeloma or so called plasma cell myeloma.
Plasma cells and rouleaux formation can be seen. Plasma cells develop from activated B cells and vary in size from 14 to 20 micrometers. They are round-to-ovoid cells containing abundant deep blue cytoplasm with a pale perinuclear area corresponding to the Golgi apparatus. They have a round, eccentrically placed nucleus with coarse chromatin arranged in a clock face (cart wheel) pattern. Rouleaux formation referred to linear aggregates of red blood cells.
