Thin blood smear reveals a ring form of P. vivax with a single chromatin dot. The form mostly resides within a reticulocyte (slightly larger than the nearby erythrocytes). This is characteristic of P. vivax versus P. falciparum which infects mature erythrocytes and their ring forms contain two chromatin dots; Eosin & Methylene Blue stain.
