A bone marrow aspirate was hypocelular but similar cells to those noted on the peripheral smear were present. Cytogenetic analysis showed the majority of cells to be abnormal; with a karyotype 47, XY, +5del. FISH studies for 11q22.3, +12, 13q14, p53, t(11:14), and 7q- were negative.
