These cell markers are expressed early in B cell differentiation (often positive when mature B cell markers are negative); also expressed in plasma cells. These markers are useful in the diagnosis of precursor B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (pre-B-ALL). The neoplastic cells are positive for CD79a in this case. Expression of CD79a would be very unusual for classic HL diagnosis and its expression here is consistent with a gray zone phenotype.
